Senator Jim Brewster
45th Senatorial District
Senator Jim Brewster
Jim Brewster has been representing the 45th District in the Pennsylvania State Senate since his election in 2010. In addition to the 30 communities in Allegheny County, his district includes 8 municipalities in Westmoreland County.
Always a fighter for working families, Jim was first elected to McKeesport City Council in 1995 and served as council president for 7 years. As Mayor beginning in 2004, Jim brought $27 million of funding to the city, in addition to making it possible for the development of the Palisades, McKee’s Point Marina, and the Greater Allegheny Passage Trail at the Waterfront. In 2009, Jim was elected to the McKeesport Area School District Hall of Fame and the McKeesport Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2010, the Pennsylvania Mayor’s Association honored him as “Mayor of the Year”, and the McKeesport Optimist Club named him “Friend of Youth” for founding the “Toys for Tots” program and for starting a youth basketball program at the Salvation Army.
As Senator, Jim’s top priority is serving his constituents by offering assistance in his many permanent and satellite district offices. He is well-known for being out in the district, attending events, and supporting local groups and organizations and for visiting all of the municipalities in the district when he’s not in Harrisburg. Jim is working hard to bring new jobs and revitalize the post-industrial communities he represents. In 2019 alone, Senator Brewster brought over $25 million back to the district from the Capitol for local development projects and community infrastructure funding.
In Harrisburg, Jim is a leading voice on fully funded and safe education for all children. As a member of the School Safety and Security Committee, he is focused on developing the criteria for schools to perform security assessments, providing schools the means to measure safety and security preparedness, and administering millions of dollars of grants to create safe school environments.
Jim also serves as the Chairman of the Senate Law & Justice Committee and the Game and Fisheries Committee, as well as the Vice Chairman of the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee. He is also a member of the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee, Education Committee, and the Transportation Committee.
In addition to the many important Senate Committees, Senator Brewster is proud to serve on several bi-partisan Legislative Caucuses, raising awareness and crafting policy for important causes in the state: Manufacturing; Afterschool; Arts and Culture; At-Risk Children and Youth; Aviation; Women’s Health; Coal; Community College; Early Childhood Education; Fire and Emergency Services; Government Reform; Law Enforcement; Parks and Recreation; and Sportsmen.
Jim has served as a director or board member for the Allegheny League of Municipalities, Pennsylvania League of Cities and Municipalities, McKeesport Optimist Club, Municipal Risk Management, Allegheny County Air Quality Control, McKeesport Development Corporation, McKeesport Recreation Board, and Penn State Greater Allegheny. Jim is currently the Secretary of the Board of the Port Authority of Allegheny County, Vice President of the Board of the Monroeville Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Chairman of the McKeesport Housing Authority.
Prior to public service, Jim was Vice President of Operations with Mellon Bank.
Senator Brewster is a graduate of California University of Pennsylvania with a degree in education and is Licensed Private Investigator.
He is married to Linda, and they have 3 daughters and 7 grandchildren.
